At the beginning of the 20th century, there was a large migratory movement in Asturias towards Cuba and the United States motivated by job offers and improvements in life status. In the US, workers with experience in melting factories and mining were in demand and these settled mainly in the states of West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Missouri.

The migratory movement to Cuba was much greater than to the United States mainly due to the language. A large part of the Asturians there worked in tobacco factories that shortly after being transferred to Tampa (Florida), led to the location of a large colony of Asturians in this city.

A large part of the young people who participated with the US in World War II were born in these states.
