Marcelino Fernández García (Max) was born in Tampa (Florida) on December 21, 1917, being the second child of the five of the marriage formed by Manuel Alonso García (Llobio, Asturias, 1892) and Ramona Fernández (El Canto, Asturias, 1887).
Marcelino studied at Hillsborough High School and worked, along with his father and brothers, in the family business, the Atlanta Restaurant, until his enlistment on October 15, 1941.
He received military training at Camp Blanding (Florida) and at the beginning of 1942 he was assigned to the 182nd Infantry Regiment, a unit that, together with the 132nd and 164th Regiments, would form the first structure of the “Americal Division”, the first infantry division that would enter in combat in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
He was assigned to Company I of the 184th Regiment as a squad leader of a mortar squad, landing on Guadalcanal on December 14, 1942 and relieving this unit of the 1st Marine Division. This would be the first operation of many that the American Division would carry out in the Pacific. Bougainville, Leyte, Cebu and finally Tokyo would follow as an occupation force. The Americal Division would return to Seattle on November 19, 1945 to proceed with its deactivation.
Marcelino would marry Matilda Martínez on April 28, 1946 and the couple would have a daughter and a son, residing in Tampa Bay and working as a supervisor of the US Postal Service until his retirement. Marcelino “Max” García would die on September 9, 1991 at the age of 74, being buried in the Centro Español Memorial Cemetery.
Marcelino Fernández García (Max) nació en Tampa (Florida) el 21 de diciembre de 1917, siendo el segundo hijo de los cinco del matrimonio formado por Manuel Alonso García (Llobio, Asturias, 1892) y Ramona Fernández (El Canto, Asturias, 1887).
Marcelino cursó estudios en el Hillsborough High School y trabajó, junto a su padre y hermanos en el negocio familiar, el Restaurante Atlanta, hasta su alistamiento el 15 de octubre de 1941.
Recibe formación militar en Camp Blanding (Florida) y a principios de 1942 es destinado al 182 Regimiento de infantería, unidad que, junto al 132 y 164 Regimientos, formarían la primera estructura de la “Americal Division”, la primera división de infantería que entraría en combate en el Teatro de Operaciones del Pacifico.
Es asignado a la Compañía I del 184 Regimiento como squad leader de una escuadra de morteros, desembarcando en Guadalcanal el 14 de diciembre de 1942 y relevando esta unidad la 1ª Division de Marines. Esta sería la primera operación de las muchas que llevaría a cabo la Americal Division en el Pacifico. Le seguirían Bougainville, Leyte, Cebú y finalmente Tokio ya como fuerza de ocupación. La Americal Division regresaría a Seattle el 19 de noviembre de 1945 para proceder a su desactivación.
Marcelino se casaría con Matilda Martínez el 28 de abril de 1946 y el matrimonio tendría una hija y un hijo, residiendo en Tampa Bay y trabajando como supervisor del Servicio Postal de USA hasta su retiro. Marcelino “Max” García fallecería el 9 de septiembre de 1991 a los 74 años, siendo enterrado en el Centro Español Memorial Cementery.
