Bombardier in nose of B-17
Augustine Fernández was born in Tampa (Florida) on January 26, 1923, being the third and last child of the marriage formed by Jose Fernández (Pereda, Oviedo, Asturias 1892) and Milagros Quintanilla (Santander, Cantabria, 1896). His brothers, also born in Tampa, were Francisco Fernández (December 7, 1915) and Fernando Fernández (May 24, 1917).
Augustine studied at Hillsborough High School, being a notable athlete and being part of the football team as a halfback in 1941 and 1942. After graduation in 1942, he enlisted in the USAAF, receiving his bomber badge in Midland, Texas. , in June 1943 and stationed at Moses Lake Army Air Base (Washington) until his transfer to Glatton Base (UK) in January 1944.
Once in Europe, 2nd Lieutenant Augustine Fernández became part of the crew of the B-17 bomber “Master Log” (42-31531) as a bomber officer of Squadron 749 of the 457th Bomber Group, belonging to the 8th Air Force.
The 457th Bomb Group began operations on February 20, 1945 over air bases and factories in Germany. On March 29, 1944, during the 22nd bombing mission over the Focke-Wulf factory in Waggum, Germany, ten Me-109 fighters attack the formation and two of them shoot down the B-17 “Master Log” at 34 miles NE of Brunswick, gunner Ssgt Omer Fontaine and pilot 2nd Lieutenant Lewis W. Lennartson died. The eight crew members who managed to parachute, among whom was Gus Fernández, would be captured and sent to the Stalagluft 1 prison camp in Barth-Vogelsang.
Augustine would be liberated on May 2, 1945 by Soviet troops, returning through France and England to the United States on July 4. He would retire from the USAAF in 1966 with the graduation of Major after serving in the Korean War as part of the Strategic Air Command and in B-29 bomber programs.
Augustine Fernández would meet his wife Dot at the University of Tallahassee (Florida), the couple had four children and lived in Miami. Augustine would die on January 5, 2018, being buried in Arlington National Cemetery (Virginia).
Augustine Fernández nace en Tampa (Florida) el 26 de enero de 1923, siendo el tercer y ultimo hijo del matrimonio formado por Jose Fernández (Pereda, Oviedo, Asturias 1892) y Milagros Quintanilla (Santander, Cantabria, 1896). Sus hermanos, también nacidos en Tampa, fueron Francisco Fernández (7 de diciembre de 1915) y Fernando Fernández (24 de mayo de 1917).
Augustine cursa estudios en el Hillsborough High School, siendo un notable deportista y formando parte del equipo de futbol como halfback en los años 1941 y 1942. Después de su graduación en 1942, se alista en la USAAF recibiendo su distintivo de bombardero en Midland, Texas, en junio de 1943 y destinado en Moses Lake Army Air Base (Washington) hasta su traslado a la base de Glatton (UK) en enero de 1944.
Una vez en Europa el 2º Teniente Augustine Fernández pasa a formar parte de la tripulación del bombardero B-17 “Master Log” (42-31531) como oficial bombardero del Escuadrón 749 del Grupo de Bombarderos 457, perteneciente al a 8ª Fuerza Aérea.
El 457 Grupo de Bombarderos comienza sus operaciones el 20 de febrero de 1945 sobre bases aéreas y factorías en Alemania. El 29 de marzo de 1944, en el transcurso de la misión de bombardeo nº 22 sobre la factoria Focke-Wulf en Waggum, Alemania, diez cazas Me-109 atacan la formación y dos de ellos derriban el B-17 “Master Log” a 34 millas al NE de Brunswick, falleciendo el artillero Ssgt Omer Fontaine y el 2º Teniente piloto Lewis W. Lennartson. Los ocho tripulantes que lograron saltar en paracaídas, entre los que se encontraba Gus Fernández, serian capturados y enviados al campo de prisioneros Stalagluft 1 en Barth-Vogelsang.
Augustine seria liberado el 2 de mayo de 1945 por tropas soviéticas, retornando a través de Francia e Inglaterra a EEUU el 4 de Julio. Se retiraría del USAAF en 1966 con la graduación de Major después de servir en la Guerra de Korea como parte del Strategic Air Command y en programas de bombarderos B-29.
Augustine Fernández conocería a su esposa Dot en la Universidad de Tallahassee (Florida), la pareja tuvo cuatro hijos y residió en Miami. Augustine fallecería el 5 de enero de 2018 siendo enterrado en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington (Virginia).
