Joseph Fernández Jr. was born in Tampa (Florida) on February 20, 1925, being the only child of the marriage formed by Jose Fernández (La Coruña, 1898) and Florentina Rodríguez (Oviedo, 1902) who lived in Havana until February 6. April 1924, date on which they settled in Tampa, Florida.

Joseph graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1943 and in June of that same year he enlisted in the US Army at Camp Blanding, Florida, where the 29th Infantry Division recruited its last units before leaving for England in October 1942. Joseph he would join the HQ Company of the 1st Battalion of the 115th Infantry Reg., (29 Division) in England months before D-Day.

With this unit he would disembark in the “Fox Green” sector of Omaha Beach on June 6 at 10:30 a.m. in front of the town of St. Laurent, which would not be secured until noon on the 7th. The fighting continued day and day. night advancing inland until reaching the Elle River on June 12, 16 km from the beaches. It is in this area, close to the town of Les Fresnes, that Joseph was wounded in the left leg, being evacuated and discharged to the United States in November 1944.

Once recovered, he asisted at the University of Florida and graduated with honors in 1948 earning a Bachelor of Arts in Education. After two years of graduate work, he taught one year at the University of Florida until 1950, when he enlisted as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

He married Jeanette Fernández on September 3, 1948 and from then on his military career led him to be part of the intelligence area of ​​the Strategic Air Command in various destinations, performing tasks as analyst and head of intelligence in regions such as Panama, Vietnam, Thailand and the US until his retirement from the US Air Force in 1976.

He is survived by his children Kurt, Susan, Keith and Maria and his grandchildren Erika, Belén, Joey, Jacob, Chelsea, Michael and Sofia. Jeanette, his wife and companion of 50 years, died in 2001. Colonel Joseph Fernández Jr. died on December 22, 2003, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Joseph se uniría a la Compañía HQ del 1º Batallon del 115 Reg. de Infantería, (29 Division) en Inglaterra meses antes del Dia D.

 

Con esta unidad desembarcaría en el sector “Fox Green” de Omaha Beach el 6 de junio a las 10:30 horas frente a la población de St. Laurent, la cual no seria asegurada hasta el mediodía del día 7. Los combates prosiguieron día y noche avanzando hacia el interior hasta alcanzar el Rio Elle el 12 de junio a 16 km de las playas, es en esta zona, cercana a la población de Les Fresnes fue donde Joseph fue herido en la pierna izquierda, siendo evacuado y licenciado en EEUU en noviembre de 1944.

 

Una vez recuperado, se matriculó en la Universidad de Florida y se graduó con honores en 1948 obteniendo una Licenciatura de Artes en Educación. Tras dos años de trabajo de posgrado, enseñó un año en la Universidad de Florida hasta 1950, que se alistó como segundo teniente de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos.

Contrajo matrimonio con Jeanette Fernández el 3 de septiembre de 1948 y a partir de aquí su carrera militar le llevo a formar parte del área de inteligencia del Strategic Air Command en diversos destinos, realizando tareas de analista y jefe de inteligencia en regiones como Panamá, Vietnam, Tailandia y EEUU hasta su retiro del US Air Force en 1976.

 

Le sobreviven sus hijos Kurt, Susan, Keith y María y sus nietos Erika, Belén, Joey, Jacob, Chelsea, Michael y Sofia. Jeanette, su esposa y compañera durante 50 años, murió en 2001. El coronel Joseph Fernández Jr. falleció el 22 de diciembre de 2003, siendo enterrado en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington.
