Celestino López Cuervo, was born in Tampa (Florida) on April 30, 1922, being the sixth child of the marriage formed by Antonio Cuervo Colao (La Mafalla, Candamo, Asturias) 11/27/1879 and Pilar Lopez Colao (El Valle, Candamo, Asturias) 11/20/1882.

​

Celestino's father died on May 20, 1934 and his mother on March 18, 1936, leaving him an orphan at the age of 14. He studied at Jefferson High School and enlisted in the Marine Corps on July 16, 1942 at Parris Island, South Carolina.

​

From July 1942 to July 1943, he was stationed in a 6/50 artillery group of the 13th defense battalion at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Operations Base (Cuba).

​

As of October 1943, he was assigned to company "C" of the 1st Battalion of the 25th Regiment of the 4th Marine Division at Camp Pendleton (California). With this unit he will have his baptism of fire in the battle of Kwajalein Atoll, in the Marshall Islands on January 31, 1944. On June 15 of that same year, his unit will take part in the Battle of Saipan (Marianas Islands) where he will fall wounded and will be awarded the first Purple Heart.

In January 1945 he was promoted to corporal and his battalion would be one of those that landed in the Battle of Iwo Jima on February 19, specifically in the Blue Beach 1 sector, the easternmost area of ​​the landing area. That same day he will be wounded by shrapnel fragments in his left arm and shoulder and evacuated to the United States. He will be discharged with honors in October, being awarded a second Purple Heart.

​

Celestino Lopez Cuervo will marry with Mrs. Palmira Lazo on July 21, 1945 and the couple will have two children, Ronald and Celeste, residing in Tampa until his death on May 5, 2014 at 92 years of age.

​

His remains rest in Woodlawn Cemetery in Hillsborough County, Tampa.

Celestino Lopez Cuervo, nace en Tampa (Florida) el día 30 de abril de 1922, siendo el sexto hijo del matrimonio formado por Antonio Cuervo Colao (La Mafalla, Candamo, Asturias) 27/11/1879 y Pilar Lopez Colao (El Valle, Candamo, Asturias) 20/11/1882.

 

El padre de Celestino fallece el 20 de mayo de 1934 y su madre el 18 de marzo de 1936, quedándose huérfano con 14 años. Cursa estudios en el Jefferson High School y se alista en el Cuerpo de Marines el 16 de julio de 1942 en Parris Island, Carolina del Sur.

 

Desde julio de 1942 hasta julio de 1943 está destinado en un grupo de artillería 6/50 del 13º batallón de defensa en la Base de Operaciones Navales de la Bahia de Guantanamo (Cuba). 

​

A partir de octubre de 1943 es destinado a la compañía “C” del 1º batallón del 25º Regimiento de la 4ª Division de Marines en Camp Pendleton (California). Con esta unidad tendrá su bautismo de fuego en la batalla del atolón de Kwajalein, en las Islas Marshall el 31 de enero de 1944. El 15 de junio de ese mismo año, su unidad tomará parte en la Batalla de Saipán (Islas Marianas) donde caerá herido y se le concederá el primer Corazón Purpura.

​

En enero de 1945 es ascendido a corporal y su batallón será uno de los que desembarque en la Batalla de Iwo Jima el 19 de febrero, concretamente en el sector Blue Beach 1, la zona más oriental del área de desembarco. Ese mismo día caerá herido por fragmentos de metralla en el brazo y hombro izquierdo y evacuado a EEUU. Sera licenciado con honores en el mes de octubre, concediéndosele un segundo Corazón Purpura.

Celestino Lopez Cuervo contraerá matrimonio con Mrs. Palmira Lazo el 21 de Julio de 1945 y el matrimonio tendrá dos hijos, Ronald y Celeste, residiendo en Tampa hasta su fallecimiento el día 5 de mayo de 2014 a los 92 años de edad.

 

Sus restos descansan en el Woodlawn Cementery del condado de Hillsborough, Tampa.
