Red Beach 1 - Latrines
The Purple Heart (PH) is a United States military decoration awarded in the name of the president to those wounded or killed while serving, on or after 5 April 1917, with the U.S. military. With its forerunner, the Badge of Military Merit, which took the form of a heart made of purple cloth, the Purple Heart is the oldest military award still given to U.S. military members.
Manuel Menéndez was born in Langeloth, Pennsylvania on December 21, 1922. He was one of the seven children of Nicolás Menéndez Granda (1894) and Elena Candanedo Menéndez (1897), originally from Naveces (Castrillón – Asturias).
The family moved to Elizabeth, New Jersey, when Manuel was little, the early death of his father, in the late 1920s, made Elena take charge of supporting her family by working in a textile factory.

Before the war, Manuel worked for the Heil trucking company at their Hillside factory.

Manuel enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 6, 1942 in New York. From there, he was sent to Parris Island for training camp.
In January 1943, with the 5th Replacement Battalion, he sailed for New Zealand and was assigned to Company K, 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines. In the following months he would be promoted to private first class and in October of the same year he would embark on the USS Arthur Middleton and they left New Zealand for their next operation: the invasion of Tarawa.

On November 20, 1943, the Third Battalion 2nd Marines was assigned the task of leading the assault on Betio's Red Beach One. They were subjected to devastating fire from the moment they crossed the island's coral reef and suffered heavy casualties upon reaching the beach, including PFC Manuel Menendez.

His remains would take years to be correctly identified, finally in October 2016, a forensic team with advanced analysis systems managed to identify the remains of the X-168 tomb. and PFC Menéndez was officially identified on August 28, 2017.

Manuel was eventually returned to his family, and on March 22, 2018, he was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
Manuel Menéndez nació en Langeloth, Pennsylvania el 21 de diciembre de 1922. Fue uno de los siete hijos de Nicolás Menéndez Granda (1894) y Elena Candanedo Menéndez (1897), originarios de Naveces (Castrillón – Asturias). La familia se mudó a Elizabeth, Nueva Jersey, cuando Manuel era pequeño, el fallecimiento temprano de su padre, a finales de la década de 1920, hizo que Elena se hiciera cargo de mantener a su familia trabajando en una fábrica textil.

Antes de la guerra, Manuel trabajó para la empresa de camiones Heil en su fábrica de Hillside.

Manuel se alistó en el US Marine Corps el 6 de noviembre de 1942 en Nueva York. Desde allí, fue enviado a Parris Island para el campo de entrenamiento.

En enero de 1943, con el 5.º Batallón de Reemplazo embarcó hacia Nueva Zelanda y fue asignado a la Compañía K, Tercer Batallón, 2.º de Infantería de Marina. En los mese siguientes seria ascendido a soldado de primera clase y en octubre del mismo año embarcaría en el USS Arthur Middleton y partieron de Nueva Zelanda para su próxima operación: la invasión de Tarawa.

El 20 de noviembre de 1943, al Tercer Batallón 2º de Infantería de Marina se le asignó la tarea de encabezar el asalto al Red Beach One de Betio. Fueron objeto de fuego devastador desde el momento en que cruzaron el arrecife de coral de la isla y sufrieron numerosas bajas al llegar a la playa., entre ellas estaría el PFC Manuel Menendez.

Sus restos tardarían años en ser correctamente identificados , finalmente en octubre de 2016, un equipo de forenses con avanzados sistemas de análisis consiguieron identificar los restos de la tumba X-168. y el PFC Menéndez fue identificado oficialmente el 28 de agosto de 2017.
​
Manuel finalmente fue devuelto a su familia y, el 22 de marzo de 2018, fue sepultado en el Cementerio Nacional de Arlington con todos los honores militares.
